Introducing Cognition for Government

by The Cognition Team
In this article:

Today, we launch Cognition for Government to modernize America’s most critical defense and civilian software with AI software engineering.

Of the $100 billion the U.S. government spends annually on IT, nearly 80% goes to maintaining existing systems rather than building new ones. Weather warnings, military readiness, and benefits all depend on aging infrastructure. Despite billions of spend, modernization keeps failing. Only 3 of 10 critical legacy systems flagged by the GAO in 2019 have been modernized.

America cannot hire its way out of this gap. Recruiting and onboarding the software engineers required, would take decades. AI software engineering multiplies what every software engineer can deliver.

Cognition built the world’s first autonomous software engineer, Devin. Now, we’re adapting that platform for the U.S. government to help solve IT modernization.

Cognition’s platform is already in use across the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Treasury Department, and NASA-JPL; at defense partners, including Anduril, Palantir, and SNC; and in the world’s leading enterprises.

Federal customers can now use Windsurf, the only FedRAMP High AI IDE. Windsurf provides real-time coding assistance for engineers building new features or maintaining existing systems. Windsurf deployments are DoD IL4/5/6 accredited, and SOC 2 Type II certified, supporting CUI and ITAR compliance, with zero data retention. On-prem deployments are available.

Devin is the first AI software engineering agent that can complete complex real-world work end-to-end — reading legacy code, planning an approach, writing and testing, and delivering finished work for human review. It runs in the cloud, executes hundreds of tasks in parallel, and can complete migrations 5-40x faster than human engineers. Devin is now available in AWS GovCloud, and a FedRAMP High Authorized version of Devin will soon be available.

Government customers using Cognition’s platform avoid lock-in to a single model provider, because Cognition constantly evaluates the best models for each task. They also receive embedded support from a forward-deployed AI engineering team which identifies high-value use cases and trains engineers onsite.
