Japan has a rare combination of the things we believe in. World class engineering talent. Ambitious enterprises. A genuine appetite for transformation. Japanese enterprises have built some of the most complex, high stakes systems in the world, and have a generation of developers who should be spending their time on hard problems, not basic implementation. Devin was built for exactly this moment.
Today, we’re expanding Cognition into Japan, marking our first step into Asia.
This is an important milestone in our mission to build the future of software engineering with Devin, our autonomous AI software engineer, and to partner with teams pushing the boundaries of what great engineering looks like.
Building Cognition Japan
To lead this next chapter, we’re proud to welcome Takumi Masai as Japan President and General Manager.
Masai brings more than 30 years of experience in advanced system development and enterprise transformation in Japan. He has held senior leadership roles at IBM, Pivotal, Microsoft, Workday, and most recently served as President of Datadog Japan.
With Masai-san leading our efforts, we are building a dedicated local team to work directly with Japanese enterprises and partners, helping improve engineering productivity, unlock projects that were previously out of reach, and accelerate how software gets built and shipped.
We are already working with a growing set of leading organizations across Japan. DeNA, one of Japan’s leading technology companies, has used Devin to more than double operational efficiency across multiple engineering functions, including new service development, code quality improvement, and automation of routine workflows. Through our partnership with ULS Consulting, we have also supported Mizuho Securities in becoming one of the first large scale financial institutions in Japan to deploy Devin.
These examples reflect the broader momentum we are seeing across industries, from consumer platforms to highly regulated financial systems.
Kicking Things Off in Tokyo
To mark our launch, we hosted Tokyo Merge, our first Merge event in Japan.
We brought together founders, engineering leaders, and enterprise teams from across Japan. It was standing room only, with leaders from many of Japan’s top companies and partners in attendance.
Tokyo Merge made one thing clear. There is real momentum behind AI native software development in Japan.

This is just the beginning.
We’re growing our team in Japan across engineering, go to market, and partnerships. We’re expanding our work with leading enterprises and investing in the local ecosystem through partnerships and community.
With Takumi Masai leading our efforts on the ground, we are committed to being a long term partner to Japanese engineering organizations as they navigate what we believe will be the most significant shift in software development in a generation.
Japan will be a major part of Cognition’s future, and we are just getting started.
If you’re building in Japan, we’d love to work with you.
